TMJ is caused almost like a dystonia reaction in the jaw muscle. I developed this after my surgery and my bite has never been the same, meaning, opening and closing my mouth don't meet at the same place anymore. My jaw goes off to the side, or gets stuck. Things like that.

Dystonia is when you can't control which way your muscles are going to move.

TMJ is painful for me. My jaw is constantly popping out of place or getting stuck in place. It is nice to know all of these symptoms are related, but at the same time annoying they can't be cured.

A lot of the displacement is because of the head gear they put on us during the operation. They have to clamp it down really tight. One surgery it was clamped down so tight I lost the muscle control to my right eyelid. Have a great big scar from that one. Anyway, every time after surgery my mouth is misaligned. Suffered for a couple of years that way and then mentioned it to a friend of mine who was a chiropractor. Within two sessions he had my mouth realigned and the muscles learned their way back into position. You can't talk or use your mouth for like a half hour or hour after he puts it in place or the muscles will pull it back they way they were. The grinding of my teeth stopped and I feel so much better. I've only had to go in like maybe twice afterwards to get realigned cuz I was stressing and tightening my mouth but it's been 2 years since the first time!

I just remembered that I did have a slight problem with tmj before my surgeries too. I remember asking about it when I was in my 20's. Grinding teeth can be actually a symptom of a neurological disorder. I never sought treatment then, but should have.

Think I have some kind of a problem related to this!
Never had brain surgery or any thing. Always loved chewing gum.
Some Docs (dentist's) had  same opinion about surgery to my jaws to make them alignment. Never thought it was that important , till I had to go to the Eastman Dental Hosp, in London. Had to use braces (up & down) two years, and they did surgery on the from right tooth (the root).
I can't chew (ex: nuts) for a long time , my jaws will became "tired" and might start making noises. Lately I think my right jaw is were I have more problems. It can be the bones of my head needing to adjust, because of the big space of my large cyst. Part of the bone of the skull is thinner all ready , were is the cyst...
